中国初の航空母艦として注目を浴びている「ワリヤーグ」だが、実は空母の本来の役目である戦闘機を艦載できず、「たんなるポンコツ」とか「無用の長物」「くず鉄の集まり」との侮蔑的な評価をする軍事専門家もいる。

ワリヤーグは現在のウクライナが売却したものであることはよく知られているが、軍事問題専門誌「ジェーン防衛週報」や米軍事・安全保障サイト「グローバル・セキュリティー」によると、ウクライナから引き渡されたワリヤーグには当初からエンジンが積載されていなかった。本来ならば、蒸気タービンエンジンを2基積載し、最高速度は29ノット（時速53.7km）のはずだが、肝心のエンジンがなかったというのだ。

このため、中国はエンジンを自前で用意しなければならなかったものの、中国は蒸気タービンエンジンや、さらに進んだガスタービンエンジンを国産化できなかったため、ワリヤーグには船舶用ディーゼルエンジンを装備した。しかし、船舶用ディーゼルエンジンは蒸気タービンエンジンなどより容積が大きい割には、出力（馬力）が小さく、ワリヤーグの最高速度は19ノット（時速約35km）でしかない。通常の空母よりも10ノット遅いのだ。

中国が対抗心を燃やす米海軍の空母は30ノット（時速54km）以上の速力がある。艦載機が発進するさい、米軍の空母は30ノット以上の速力で向かい風を作り、艦載機に十分な揚力を与えて発進させているが、ワリヤーグはそれができないため、空母として致命的な欠陥を持っているのだ。

さらに、大きな問題点が最近指摘されている。一般に空母は滑走路が短いことから、母艦に帰還する艦載機が着陸する際、速やかに停止させるためのフックや制御ワイヤなどの着艦関連装置が装備されているが、ワリヤーグにはこれらの着艦関連装置が備え付けられていないことが分かっている。現状では、空母してはまったく使えないことになる。

それらの装置を調達すればよいのだが、旧ソ連邦製の空母の着艦装置を製造しているロシア企業が中国への売却を拒否しているという。その理由は、中国がロシアの戦闘機などを許可なくコピーして製造していることに不快感を持っているためだという。

実際、ワリヤーグの艦載機として考えられているのは「殲15」戦闘機と伝えられるが、これはロシア製の空母艦載機である「スホイ33」のコピーだと伝えられており、中国としては「身から出た錆（さび）」としか言いようがない。

かくして、ワリヤーグはエンジンに致命的な欠陥をもち、肝心の艦載機の着艦関連装置がなく、さらに艦載機も模造品であるなど、「空母としては無用の長物で、たんなるポンコツでしかない」との評価が定着しつつあるのである。
